Understanding the year helps you judge every timing answer. The question list and what good answers sound like
Ask: what is the restricted period in this state, and where is that published? A good answer gives dates and names the agency. A poor answer is that there is no restriction, or that they exclude year-round. Ask: what date do you propose to install devices, and why that date? A good answer is a date after the restriction ends, chosen for warm nights, with a reason. A poor answer is the next opening on the schedule. Ask: how many flying nights do you require before removal, and how do you count them? A good answer is at least five to seven nights above roughly 50 F without steady rain, tracked jointly with you. A poor answer is a fixed number of calendar days. Ask: what is your fall cutoff for this area? A good answer names a month and explains that cold nights stop emergence. A poor answer is that it does not matter. Ask: what happens if a cold week interrupts the device period? A good answer is that devices stay up until enough warm nights accumulate, verified by a dusk watch, even if that means a return visit. A poor answer is that they seal on the scheduled date regardless. Ask: can you inspect and seal non-active gaps now, during the restriction? A good answer is yes, leaving active exits open, and it shows the provider understands the sequence. Ask: will the installation and removal dates be in the agreement? The answer should be yes. Record every answer next to its question and compare providers side by side.
Weather, the device period, and the late-summer indoor bat
Even inside the legal window, the device period succeeds or fails on weather. bats do not emerge on cold, rainy, or windy nights, so a device left up for a calendar week that included four bad nights has only done three nights of work. Removing it on schedule seals in whatever did not leave. Agree with the provider before installation on what counts as a flying night and who tracks it. Young bats exploring for the first time find their way through gaps around chimneys, light fixtures, and attic doors into bedrooms. If one is found in a room where someone was sleeping, or with a child, a pet, or anyone unable to say whether they were touched, public health agencies treat it as a possible rabies exposure. Do not touch it, contain it under a box if you can do so safely, and call the local health department about testing before releasing it. Tell the provider, since an indoor bat means an interior route that should be sealed alongside the exterior work.
