What to look for

Chirping at dusk

Rustling or squeaking in a wall or attic around sunset is a classic sign of bats heading out to feed.

Droppings under the eaves

Small dark droppings on sills, decks or walls below a gap. They crumble into shiny bits, unlike mouse droppings.

Stains around gaps

Dark, greasy marks around a small gap at the roofline show where bats squeeze in and out.

Frequently asked questions

A bat was in my bedroom. What should I do?
Don't let it go yet. Call your doctor or health department right away. Bat bites can be too small to notice.
When can bats be sealed out?
After pups can fly, usually from mid-August into fall. In Florida, exclusion isn't allowed from April 15 to August 14.
Is bat guano dangerous?
It can be. Dry droppings can carry histoplasmosis. Don't sweep or vacuum them dry.
Can I just seal the hole at night?
No. Some bats and pups stay inside. One-way devices let them all leave first.
Should I put up a bat house?
It's a nice idea. Mount it high in a sunny spot so evicted bats have somewhere to go.
What does bat removal cost?
Most jobs cost several hundred to a few thousand dollars. Sealing and attic cleanup are the big costs.
